A physical attendance register is a write-only memory. It records presence beautifully and answers questions terribly. "How many days was Riya absent this term?" means an hour of counting. "Which class has chronic absenteeism?" means a meeting.
What changes when attendance is digital
Digital attendance turns a daily chore into a searchable dataset. The register is still marked in the morning, but now it answers: defaulter lists by threshold, absentee trends by class, and per-student histories that surface in parent meetings and certificate decisions.
The second-order benefit is the alert. When a student is marked absent, an optional WhatsApp or SMS nudge can go to the guardian within minutes — something a paper register could never do.
The honest caveat
Attendance software only works if the marking habit holds. The systems that fail are not the ones with missing features — they are the ones where the register quietly went back to paper. Keep it simple: one class, one tap, one day at a time.
